Leonardo DiCaprio addressed world leaders assembled for the United Nations Climate Summit early Tuesday morning, urging them to take action to address "the greatest challenge of our existence on this planet."  "As an actor, I pretend for a living. I play fictitious characters often solving fictitious problems. I believe humankind has looked at climate change in that same way," he said at the summit. "My friends, this body -- perhaps more than any other gathering in human history -- now faces that difficult task. You can make history... or be vilified by it." UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently appointed DiCaprio to serve as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, calling the actor a “new voice for climate advocacy."

Both Ban and DiCaprio participated in Sunday's 400,000-strong People's Climate March in New York City. Take a look at DiCaprio's speech above. You can read a full transcription below. Thank you, Mr. Secretary-General, your excellencies, ladies and gentleman, and distinguished guests. I’m honored to be here today, I stand before you not as an expert but as a concerned citizen, one of the 400,000 people who marched in the streets of New York on Sunday, and the billions of others around the world who want to solve our climate crisis.

 As an actor I pretend for a living. I play fictitious characters often solving fictitious problems. I believe humankind has looked at Climate Change in that same way: as if it were a fiction, happening to someone else’s planet, as if pretending that Climate Change wasn’t real would somehow make it go away. But I think we know better than that.

, we’re seeing new and undeniable Climate Events, evidence that accelerated Climate Change is here now. We know that droughts are intensifying, our oceans are warming and acidifying, with methane plumes rising up from beneath the ocean floor. We are seeing extreme weather events, increased temperatures, and the West Antarctic and Greenland ice-sheets melting at unprecedented rates, decades ahead of scientific projections. None of this is rhetoric, and none of it is hysteria. It is fact. The scientific community knows it, Industry and Governments know it, even the United States military knows it.

The Chief of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Command, Admiral Samuel Locklear, recently said that Climate Change is our single greatest security threat. My Friends, this body - perhaps more than any other gathering in human history - now faces that difficult task. You can make history...or be vilified by it. To be clear, this is not about just telling people to change their light bulbs or to buy a hybrid car. This disaster has grown BEYOND the choices that individuals make.

This is now about our industries, and governments around the world taking decisive, large-scale action. I am not a scientist, but I don't need to be. Because the world’s scientific community has spoken, and they have given us our prognosis, if we do not act together, we will surely perish. Now is our moment for action We need to put a pricetag on carbon emissions, and eliminate government subsidies for coal, gas, and oil companies. We need to end the free ride that industrial polluters have been given in the name of a free-market economy, they don't deserve our tax dollars, they deserve our scrutiny.

For the economy itself will die if our eco-systems collapse. The good news is that renewable energy is not only achievable but good economic policy. New research shows that by 2050 clean, renewable energy could supply 100% of the world’s energy needs using EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES, and it would create millions of jobs. This is not a partisan debate; it is a human one. Clean air and water, and a livable climate are inalienable human rights.

And solving this crisis is not a question of politics. It is our moral obligation - if, admittedly, a daunting one… We only get one planet. Humankind must become accountable on a massive scale for the wanton destruction of our collective home. Protecting our future on this planet depends on the conscious evolution of our species. This is the most urgent of times, and the most urgent of messages.

Honored delegates, leaders of the world, I pretend for a living. But you do not. The people made their voices heard on Sunday around the world and the momentum will not stop. And now it’s YOUR turn, the time to answer the greatest challenge of our existence on this planet... is now I beg you to face it with courage. And honesty. Thank you.

Glow-in-the-Dark Road Lights Up for Drivers

Glow in the dark road markings have been unveiled on a 500m stretch of highway in the Netherlands south east of Amsterdam.
The paint contains a "photo-luminizing" powder that charges up in the daytime and slowly releases a green glow at night, doing away with the need for streetlights -- and all the energy they require.
Daan Roosegaarde's inspiration came from the undersea world, and he has been working on several ideas for sustainable roads that he calls Smart Highways.

Window Socket: Portable Solar-Powered Outlet Sticks to Windows, Charges Small Electronics

The Window Socket is an idea so fabulously simple, it’s slightly amazing that we haven’t seen one before. Designed by Kyuho Song & Boa Oh, the charger sticks to a window and draws solar power to an internal battery, which enables one to either plug in small devices to the outlet right there and then, or save the stored power for use during night time hours.

According to Yanko Design, Kyuho Song & Boa Oh “tried to design a portable socket, so that users can use it intuitively without special training.” It sticks to a window with a suction plate that encircles the solar panel, and a basic outlet feeds the converted solar power to a device—and that’s pretty much it. As the designers point out, this is a charger/converter that can be used anywhere there’s daylight, particularly where there is restricted use of electricity, such as outdoors or on a plane.

At present, the Window Socket is still a concept, but in the near future the designers hope to increase its efficiency, energy storage and charge time. The battery on the Window Socket is very small; at 1000mAh the stored power might be about enough to charge a mobile phone—particularly if it were a USB outlet rather than a standard one, but it won’t be enough to power household appliances. And while it can provide 10 continuous hours of power on a full charge, it presently takes about 5-8 hours to fully charge. But even that can’t completely take a way from it’s awesome, simple design.

Harvest Home in Colorado is what we mean when we call a home sustainable and green

In Las Vegas, they are calling a monster home sustainable and green. In Denver, they are building a row of houses in response to the Denver Superefficient Housing Challenge.

These teams are tasked with designing five “demonstration homes” that are at least 50–60 percent more efficient than local building code and within the DHA’s affordable housing cost parameters. Meeting this efficiency goal could allow for a small solar array (say 200 to 400 square feet of panels) to fulfill the entire home’s energy demands. The challenge not only gives the Denver Housing Authority models to use for future buildings, but those models will actually be built and lived in, providing five Denver families with homes that are efficient, healthy, and affordable.

One of the winners was Toronto's Ryerson University with The Harvest Home. Like the house in Las Vegas, it is designed with the real estate development industry in mind, if a bit of a different market sector. From the press release:
“The idea of the Harvest Home was to design a highly insulated building that can exploit natural solar energy to create a comfortable and pleasant home that would be appropriate for a developer home,” says faculty supervisor Mark Gorgolewski. “We wanted to be able to harvest the natural resources made possible by cycles of nature.”
They expand on this in the brief:
To harvest in the traditional sense of the term refers to the gathering of agricultural crops - a collection of resources made possible by the cycles of nature. The Harvest Home expands this definition beyond the agricultural context through the exploitation of natural solar and precipitation cycles in pursuit of superior building performance made possible through passive, contextually informed architectural design. The 1,175 square foot, two and one half storey row house aims to become a cost effective, Passive House certified, net-zero energy ready model home. Through the development of an optimized building form, envelope and material palette, the home’s preliminary construction cost is projected to be approximately $182,000 or a modest $146 per square foot. In addition to its inexpensive construction, the Harvest Home promises a significant reduction in annual energy costs.

A tight, efficient plan with lots of natural light

It is a straightforward plan, with an open concept floor to maximize penetration of natural light. In fact, it is pretty much a traditional Toronto side-stair Victorian house post renovation, although that would have three bedrooms instead of the third floor multifunction space. Perhaps it is convertible.

Built to Passivhaus principles

Designing a row house is already more efficient in terms of energy because of the dramatic reduction in exposure. However when you build walls to R-43.5 and roof to R-55.6 and add in carefully placed, modestly sized high quality windows, carefully work to eliminate thermal bridges, and you get an energy-efficient package that has estimated electricity costs of $ 376 per year. Invest in a little bit of photovoltaics and you are net zero.


Employing Passive House principles to significantly reduce energy demand and heating loads, along with consideration for future photovoltaic installation, the Harvest Home is Net Zero Energy ready. Designed air-tight and thermal bridge free, the envelope provides excellent continuous insulation and appropriate moisture control. Glazing distribution and solar optimized pergolas take advantage of the abundant solar exposure and reduce over-heating.

There's not really a whole lot of high tech in this house; a pretty standard 12,000 BTU Mr. Slim minisplit heats and cools the whole thing. The ERV unit and fresh air makeup system mixes it all up for even heat distribution. There's a big GE heat pump water heater with preheat using a power pipe. Really simple stuff.

But because it is built to Passivhaus standards, the annual energy consumption and cost is negligible. Because there is so little gizmo green, the maintenance costs are similarly going to be tiny. It is just a great example of why Passivhaus is so smart and net-zero so silly; you don't need acres of solar panels and complicated buy-back arrangements and feed-in tarriffs, you just need a shitload of insulation, careful design and siting, and a couple of warm bodies.
Really, someone should tell the National Association of Homebuilders thatthis is the New American Home.

TruthOnPot.com – Hemp is making a comeback in nearly every industry, transportation included.
Although hemp was first used by Henry Ford in 1941 and can still be found in many cars today, the Kestrel is the first modern car to be built primarily out of hemp.
Fittingly, the car was designed in Canada by Calgary-based Motive Industries Inc. Unlike the U.S., the Canadian government welcomes hemp farming and actively invests in the industry.

The Kestrel is a three-door hatchback that runs on battery power and is made from “hemp composite as strong as the fiberglass in boats, yet incredibly lightweight,” Nathan Armstrong, the president of Motive Industries, explained to Popular Science. The composite is made from infusing hemp stalks with polymer resin.
Weighing only 2,500 pounds, the Kestrel has a better fuel-efficiency than other electric cars, Armstrong also stated. He’s optimistic that Motive has pinpointed what “might be the sweet spot for electric vehicles.”

Unlike most electric vehicles, the Kestrel relies entirely on electrical power. A 16 kWh lithium-ion battery will allow the Kestrel to go up to 160 km per charge, with a top speed between 90 to 130 km/hr.
Over the last three years of prototyping, Motive Industries has received global interest from countries as far away as India. It’s also attracted the attention of celebrities such as Ziggy Marley, who reportedly gifted a Kestrel door panel to the owners of KNACKA – an Oregon-based hemp shop – last week.

Unfortunately, delays have pushed the deadline for commercial production past Motive’s initial goal of 2012.
But when the Kestrel finally becomes available to buyers, the line-up will likely be long.

Motive expects the hemp car to be priced at $25,000 – an investment that will surely appeal to the many drivers who see no end in rising gas prices.

Hemp fuel is a way out of oil! Planting only 6 percent of the continental United States with biomass crops such as hemp would supply all current domestic demands for oil and gas. Hemp fuel is a real alternative.

Did you know the average American spends 33 of 40 working hours to support their need for energy? It's true; 80 percent of the total monetary living expense for everything we do is ultimately wrapped up in energy costs; from the energy it takes to make the food we eat, to fuel for the cars we drive, to the manufacturing, storage and transportation of the products we buy. And 80 percent of solid and airborne pollution in our environment can be blamed on fossil energy sources. It is estimated that America has already exhausted 80 percent of its fossil fuel reserves. Isnt this a recipe for disaster? Hemp fuel is needed.

Industrial hemp is the number one biomass producer on earth, meaning an actual contender for an economically competitive, clean burning hemp fuel. Hemp has four times the biomass and cellulose potential and eight times the methanol potential of its closest competing crop - corn. Burning coal and oil are the greatest sources of acid rain; biomass fuels burn clean and contain no sulphur and produce no ash during combustion. The cycle of growing and burning biomass crops keeps the worlds carbon dioxide level at perfect equilibrium, which means that we are less likely to experience the global climactic changes (greenhouse effect). Hemp oil is the source for hemp fuel.

10 Low-tech tactics for living more sustainably

As our Technology section commenters love to point out, we often publish pieces on green tech and cleantech advances that are more "pie in the sky" concepts and solutions instead of realistic and viable methods of living more sustainably that the average person can implement at home.
And there's some truth to that, as many of us tech bloggers tend to grab the "sexier" items about new gadgets and technology and write them up, in the hopes of a big flood of web traffic coming from readers that may not be our core audience at heart, but that might enjoy reading and sharing posts about potentially disruptive products or services.
To be honest, the old model of blogging tended to financially reward writers that could bring more pageviews to their posts, regardless of whether or not those posts were actually helpful to their audience in terms of making their lives greener and more sustainable, and so many times, that incentive drove many writers to post about topics that had a higher traffic potential. That type of traffic-based pay is not really the case in many places on the web anymore (at least for this site and many others like it), and we'd like to increase our appeal to our core readers, so in order to get back to posting about core sustainable living topics here, I'm going to begin focusing again on low-tech and appropriate technology and simple and affordable methods for greening our lives.
To that end, I found myself thinking lately about the tactics and tools that I myself have been using to try to live with a lower environmental footprint over the last 10 years or so. Some of these ideas may seem like no-brainers (though I'm constantly surprised at how many people dismiss them anyway, because they may require either a little more effort or changing well-entrenched habits), and some of them may not be feasible, depending on where you live (due to the climate, the type of dwelling you live in and what your neighborhood is like, what the weather is like during certain seasons), but chances are, you can probably find at least one thing to put into practice in your daily life.

10 Low-tech and simple tactics for living more sustainably

1. Solar and indoor clothes drying: In a culture where electricity and natural gas are relatively cheap, we tend to use them rather generously, especially to dry our clothes or heat our houses or heat our water. And aside from saving a little bit of money, reducing our energy use can also have an effect on the overall environment, whether it's less air pollution and GHG emissions or less dependence on fossil fuels, so to my way of thinking, it's almost always better to use less energy to get the same job done.
We all wash our clothes regularly (some would argue that we wash them too regularly, and could cut our energy and water use further by just wearing things more than once before washing them), and many people also use a clothes dryer to finish the process. But if you live in an area with abundant sunshine at least part of the year, the old-school clothesline in the backyard or balcony can get the job done just as well (and without added wear and tear on our clothes). For those who live in places where that's not a viable method, or during the winter, clothes drying racks that can be set up indoors are an option. While your clothes may not dry as fast inside, out of the sun and wind, they will still get dry without having to use additional energy, and in arid regions, have the added benefit of adding a bit of moisture to your indoor air.

2. Passive solar heat: Even if you can't afford a solar power system for your home, if you get a lot of direct sun on your house throughout the winter, addingpassive solar air heaters can effectively raise the indoor temperature, cutting down on the need for external energy sources for heating. This project has been on my list for a while now, but because temperatures have been so mild in my area (southern New Mexico) this winter, I haven't made it a priority. Based on reading the experiences of those who have built passive solar heaters, including the efforts of a Denver group to install them on the homes of low income area residents, they can be an effective method of harvesting free heat.
3. Insulating or shading windows: By blocking the direct sunlight from windows during the summer, and adding insulating curtains to windows in the winter, homes can be kept cooler in summer and warmer in the winter, without needing to use any extra energy. We've experienced a big improvement in moderating the temperatures through both winter and summer by either shading windows (outside shading is more effective, but curtains and blinds inside the windows also work) or adding heavy homemade curtains to them in the winter time.
4. Solar chargers: I have several small solar chargers that I use to recharge my phone, MP3 player, or other gadgets, which lets me take advantage of free renewable energy on sunny days, and lets me rely less on electricity from the grid for these devices. I have a GoalZero Guide 10 Plus package, which charges up a battery pack to recharge other gadgets, and it can also be used for rechargeable batteries that can be used in other small devices. The other one (aWakaWaka solar light) is a combination solar charger and LED light, so I can also use it for a reading light after dark.
5. Reuse of household greywater and rainwater catchment:Depending on where you live, you may find that regulations governing the reuse of household greywater can be very restrictive, but in NM, they are rather progressive, and average households can use greywater without running afoul of the law. In other areas, using buckets to bail out the bathtub after a shower or bath, and putting that water on your yard or landscaping is one way to get around those regulations. Another method is using a container to catch the cold water that comes out of the tap while you're waiting for the hot water to get there, and using that water for houseplants or garden (it's not even greywater, as it hasn't been used yet). Adding some form of rainwater catchment device to your downspouts (either homemade or readymade) will allow you to keep some of the rainwater in your yard for plants, instead of sending it directly down to the storm sewers. If adding rain barrels isn't OK where you live, then one possibility is directing the water from your downspouts into planting areas or a small pond, as long as you plan for overflow events and have a way to direct the water to different areas of the yard.
6. Shorter showers and flushing less: Taking short showers (or Navy-style showers, where you turn the water off while soaping up, and turn it back on to rinse off) can make a big difference in household water use, especially if you shower every single day. Not flushing the toilet when there's just pee in it is another method of conserving a valuable resource (why use gallons of clean water to flush every time you urinate?), and if you live in the country or aren't afraid of being caught "fertilizing the yard" by your neighbors, peeing outside is a viable option. In addition, if you want to get a little more radical in your approach to using less water in the bathroom, you can set up a humanure system (also referred to as a sawdust toilet) and compost your waste.
7. Reusable rags for cleaning: We don't ever use or buy paper towels, but instead use cloth rags (either washcloths from the thrift store, or made from old towels) to clean with. These rags can be used over and over again and last for a very long time, and can be washed with your other towels or clothes. They are also much tougher than any disposable towels, as you can scrub just about anything without them coming apart in your hands. We also use washcloths instead of baby wipes when our young ones are in diapers (also cloth), and using both cloth diapers and washcloths instead of buying disposables has saved us a lot of money over the years.
8. Sprouting at home: Learning how to sprout your own seeds is one small way to get started in home food production, and it's much cheaper (and safer, in terms of the possibility of contamination from mass-grown sprouts) than buying sprouts at the grocery store. Sprouting at home is easy to do, and it doesn't require a lot of space or a lot of sun (only indirect light to green them up at the end), so it can be a fun way to get fresh homegrown food into your diet, even in the winter.
9. Buy in bulk: We buy all of our staple foods in bulk, from our local food co-op, which allows us to skip the packaging, to only buy what we need (or to buy a lot to stock our pantry), and to save money (when compared to packaged versions). We also prepare most of our food from scratch, which is again cheaper than the same quality (organically grown, non-GMO) packaged foods, and gives us more control over what goes into the food we eat. We've found that having plenty of our staple foods at home keeps us from spending impulsively on prepared or "junk" foods, and has the added value of keeping us and our kids more connected to our food.
10. Cleaning with simple green products: To clean our house, we mostly use Dr Bronner's liquid soap, which are very concentrated and can be diluted quite a bit and still be effective. It doesn't have a strong scent or leave any residue behind, and can also be used in the bath (or to wash your hair or brush your teeth). We also use white vinegar to clean surfaces, and baking soda to deodorize. I'm a fan of the "no poo" method of hair care, and use baking soda to wash my hair and apple cider vinegar to condition it, which is not only cheap to do, but just as effective as shampoo, without the alphabet soup of added ingredients and scents.
These are some of the low-tech and simple methods that I and my family use to try to live greener and more sustainably in our home, and while I know that not all of these may suit your lifestyle or locale, you might find that by implementing some of them, you'll also see other ways to go greener in your everyday life.

A Nomad Micro Home is Easier to Assemble Than Furniture

The Nomad Micro home is the brainchild of Vancouver architect Ian Kent, who is currently raising funds to begin producing the home through an Indie Go Go campaign. The Nomad Micro Home can be described as a sustainable tiny house kit. It is so small and lightweight that the buyer can ship it anywhere in the world, and once it arrives, anyone with some basic carpentry skills can assemble it on their own.
The Nomad Micro Home measures a measly 10×10 feet and features a living room, kitchen, and an upstairs sleeping loft. However, due to the size constraints, several of these serve a double purpose. For example, the shelves in the kitchen are also the stairs to the loft area and the whole bathroom is also a shower. The Nomad is designed to house one or two people, though several house kits can be assembled together to make a larger home.

The base Nomad Micro house kit will cost $25,000, which does not include optional extras such as solar panels. The panels of the home can be assembled using a cordless drill, and due to its simple foundation, the house can also be moved to a new location on a whim. Pre-engineered green packages can also be purchased as an add-on to the basic house kits, and include rooftop solar energy panels, and rainwater collection and grey water treatment systems.
The building is composed of metal structural insulated panels, with a floor and roof insulation values of R-24 and wall insulation of R-12. The exterior finish is comprised of galvanized metal siding. The electrical system of the Nomads is a 12V power system, which will work with a solar power kit and most other conventional power sources. Other optional add-ons for the Nomad include a compost toilet, a propane water heater, and a propane forced air stove, which taken together have the ability to make the Nomad an off the grid home.
The Nomad house is also well suited for construction in a wide variety of environments. The materials used to build the Nomad home resist rot, termites and fire. Due to this, the home is well suited to assemble in tropical environments and forests, while it can even be used as a houseboat. The home is also resilient enough to weather storms and earthquakes. Some added insulation would even make it suitable for extreme cold conditions.

19-Year-Old BOYAN SLAT Develops Ocean Cleanup Array That Could Remove 7 Million Tons Of Plastic From the Ocean

19-year-old BOYAN SLAT has unveiled plans to create an Ocean Cleanup Array that could remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic waste from the world’s oceans. The device consists of an anchored network of floating booms and processing platforms that could be dispatched to garbage patches around the world. Instead of moving through the ocean, the array would span the radius of a garbage patch, acting as a giant funnel. The angle of the booms would force plastic in the direction of the platforms, where it would be separated from plankton, filtered and stored for recycling.

At school, Boyan Slat launched a project that analyzed the size and amount of plastic particles in the ocean’s garbage patches. His final paper went on to win several prizes, including Best Technical Design 2012 at the Delft University of Technology. Boyan continued to develop his concept during the summer of 2012, and he revealed it several months later at TEDxDelft 2012.

Slat went on to found The Ocean Cleanup Foundation, a non-profit organization which is responsible for the development of his proposed technologies. His ingenious solution could potentially save hundreds of thousands of aquatic animals annually, and reduce pollutants (including PCB and DDT) from building up in the food chain. It could also save millions per year, both in clean-up costs, lost tourism and damage to marine vessels.

It is estimated that the clean-up process would take about five years, and it could greatly increase awareness about the world’s plastic garbage patches. On his site Slat says, “One of the problems with preventive work is that there isn’t any imagery of these ‘garbage patches’, because the debris is dispersed over millions of square kilometres. By placing our arrays hcowever, it will accumulate along the booms, making it suddenly possible to actually visualize the oceanic garbage patches. We need to stress the importance of recycling, and reducing our consumption of plastic packaging.” To find out more about the project and to contribute, click here.
